Shilpi and Sheel
Shilpi and Sheel were married on October 1st, with a ceremony and reception at the Hilton at Pearl River in New York.
I started out the day photographing Shilpi as she got ready, wearing the wedding dress her cousin designed, while my second shooter was with Sheel. The moment Shilpi’s mother saw her in the morning as she got ready was one of my favorite images of the whole day. It perfectly captured the emotions ringing in the air. We then staged a first look on a small bridge, and the bride and groom exchanged their gifts. Shilpi gave Sheel a watch, and he gave her a camera.
After the first look and the gift exchange, it was time for the procession of the baraat—the groom’s entrance and the greeting of the bride’s parents—before the ceremony itself. After a beautiful, touching ceremony, the two of them changed out of their wedding attire into reception outfits, and then it was time to party.
One of the things that stuck out to me most throughout the day was the special bond that Shilpi shares with her father. In fact, my favorite moment was when she and her dad danced together at the reception—it was easy to feel the emotional charge to the air.
Sheel is a DJ, so the first time he introduced himself to Shilpi, he said, “Hi, I’m DJ Steel!” When I heard that story, I kept calling him DJ Steel throughout the entire wedding and reception. It became a thing. But I felt like it was emblematic of the whole day, which was a celebration of these two and their quirks and love for each other. They have the most beautiful bond and appreciation for each other, and I heard often throughout the day that they are each other’s best friends.
Sheel & Shilpi, thank you so much for including me in your wedding celebration. I was honored to be part of your big day, and I wish nothing but joy for you both.
